The natural process of speaking a language
You will probably speak the language if you listen to it every day. A baby who was born in Thailand surely speaks Thai language. Other was born in America, he will absolutely speak English.
The baby hear and listen to people talk everyday and he himself slowly catch up the words and their meanings, then he immitate to say those words again and again. Therefore, he will speak the language of the country he was born in.
Is this the same process of learning English to those ESL learners? I think it would be not much different. If you do the right way of learning a language, we can use it in communication when we need to have conversation in that language.
Listening Practice
How to improve your English Listening skills?
ESL learners usually do the wrong ways to learn English. So they don't really improve their English skills much after speding lots of time to learn.
In order to improve your listening skill, you need to have the right method to practice. It depends on the level of English you are, you need to do something accordingly.
- Elementary level
- If you just begin to learn English, you must spend more time to practice your listening skill. First thing first! The more you listen to English, the better you will be good at listening. Why do I say so? if people's mother tongue is not English, they have to train their ears to recognize the English sounds when they start learning English; that's why they have to spend much more time than people who have been learning English for a while. And this process will be at least the first 3 months.
- After you are familiar with English sounds, then you will have different ways to practice.
- Pre-intermediate and above
- ESL learners say that they don't understand what they listen to in English. Well, that's right. There may be many new words in the listening that give problems of understanding to learners. They must know all the vocabulary in the listening to understand the contents. Therefore, it is clear that you have to learn all the words in the listening before you start to practice your listening skill.
- In order to improve your listening skill, there are two important things to do. First thing is that you practice your listening often and by many different sources; such as listening to CD or tape in English, listening to English radio, watching English TV programs or English movies, etc. Second thing is that you need to use what you have learned or practice into your real life conversations.
